Antenatal, Postnatal and Family Support

Practical and Therapeutic Family Support

I hold a Diploma in Hypnotherapy & Psychotherapy, a Certificate in Stress Management and a Diploma in NLP & Coaching, and can offer individual support to parents and families in a range of circumstances.

Antenatal issues
Some women unfortunately have upsetting or traumatic memories of difficult previous births. While the HypnoBirth® programme is excellent for dispelling these fears and creating a more positive expectancy of labour and birth this time around, some women may require more specialist, in-depth and personal support to overcome the negative associations they may hold. I can offer a sympathetic and supportive approach to dealing with these issues. I will talk through your previous experiences, and can give advice on where you may get more information about what happened, if necessary. Using gentle relaxation techniques, I will help you to let go of the strong emotions surrounding these previous experiences and start to look forward to your subsequent birth with calmness and joy instead of fear.

Postnatal issues
Some postnatal issues such as establishing breastfeeding, and anxiety, can be exacerbated by the strong emotions and hormones that course through a woman's body immediately after birth! These can also impede the body's ability to heal efficiently. Many new parents feel overwhelmed, and simply don't trust in their own instincts to be 'good' parents. However, we all do have a natural, instinctive ability to care for our new babies; gentle relaxation and hypnosis techniques can help to over-ride the negative self-talk that keeps us worrying that we are not 'doing it right'. I will provide a sympathetic ear to listen to your worries and concerns, and use hypnosis techniques targeted at whatever is concerning you regarding your parenting skills to help you to relax and enjoy your new role as a mother. There are effective strategies to help you relax and increase your milk supply if you need help with breastfeeding, however I will always refer you to contact your own Breastfeeding Peer Supporter as they will also be able to provide you with specialist advice regarding correct positioning and so on.

Family issues
During my 16 years spent working as a Special Needs teacher, I was fortunate to work with some wonderful children and parents who all taught me many things about families, Special Needs, and dealing with the world! I am happy to now be able to work in a practical and supportive way with families to help with individual and specific issues. I found that many children with Special Needs have never learned to just 'switch off'; they are constantly battling with ways of coping with the outside world which is exhausting and debilitating for them and their families. All families, with or without Special Needs, can sometimes need support; whether in coping with sleep issues, tantrums, coping with siblings or just learning to live together peacefully and harmoniously. I can offer:
  • teaching the whole family gentle guided relaxation techniques; this enables the family to spend some quiet, 'bonding' time without being too demanding in terms of the interaction between each member.
  • practical advice on dealing with the child, with or without Special Needs, and their siblings to help ensure that all their needs are met
  • practical advice on helping your child to cope at school
  • sympathetic and supportive listening to help each family develop their own ways of coping in a more calm and positive manner
